Background: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) neuromodulation of the medial branch of cervical root is considered to be an effective treatment option of cervicogenic headache alternative to conventional radiofrequency neurotomy. In this study we aim to describe efficacy and safety of PRF treatment which target medial branch of cervical root in patients with cervicogenic headache.
Methods: Diagnostic criteria of cervicogenic headache was driven from Revised International Classification of Headache
Disorders-II (ICHD-IIR). We performed pulsed radiofrequency neuromodulation to the patients twice with positive
effect from diagnostic block of the occipital nerves. Efficacy was measured by the visual analog scale (VAS) before
and after procedure, and no complication correlated with procedure were collected for safety report.
Results: 23 consecutive patients who visited out patient department of neurology and neurosurgery between October
2012 and September 2014 were selected. Significant decrease of VAS was identified immediately after treatment (p<
0.001), VAS at last visit was also significant decreased compared with pre-treatment VAS (p<0.001). Long term complete
resolution was maintained in 52% of patients.
Conclusion: The efficacy and safety of PRF treatment for cervicogenic headache were quite noticeable. Further research
regarding PRF is warranted.
